The best things to do in Civitavecchia on a cruise
How to exit the port
When you are stopping in Civitavecchia, located 70 km from Rome, it is important to understand that you will need to find your own transportation to reach the Italian capital. Unfortunately, many cruise passengers mistakenly think that Civitavecchia is Rome, perhaps due to the fact that it is listed as “Civitavecchia/Rome” on cruise port itineraries. However, this is not the case, and it is essential that you make your own way to Rome.
Cruise lines will offer excursions to reach Rome on their buses, but these are very expensive (99 euros per person). This high price can be a significant drain on your budget, especially if you are traveling in a group.
However, there are much more affordable and equally convenient options that we use.
→ Alternative options to get to Rome
→ Until now I recommended the one at 30 euros but today of course the one at 25 euros is perfect! On the other hand, because of its price, it is quickly stormed. You will see some dates are already unavailable. I really advise you to
book your places now.
- This shuttle is a good idea, the SHUTTLE BUS does the same route and can be taken 150 meters from Largo della Pace (2 minutes walk just opposite) and costs 25 euros return.
- Shuttle from the port of Civitavecchia . 30 euros return (an increase of 5 euros since May instead of 25 euros) but efficient!!!.
- Rome Sightseeing Bus from Civitavecchia . Choose a panoramic bus tour from Civitavecchia for a flexible discovery of Rome, hopping on and off at your favorite sites with complete freedom.
- Luxury private transfer from Civitavecchia port to Rome for 2/3 people. For more comfort and personalization, consider a private transfer to Rome from Civitavecchia if you can afford it.
Please note: free shuttles are available at the foot of the boat to leave the port in just 3 minutes (free shuttle). All the excursions you have booked leave from there.
Getting to Rome by train from Civitavecchia
After leaving the port of Civitavecchia, you have three options to reach Rome: train, taxi or shuttle.
Walking distance to Civitavecchia train station:
- The train station is approximately a 20-minute walk from the port.
- Follow the signs for “Stazione Ferroviaria” or “Train Station” to get there easily.
- This route is ideal for budget-conscious travelers.
Take a taxi to Civitavecchia train station:
- If you prefer a faster and more comfortable journey, opt for a taxi.
- The ride lasts about 10 minutes and usually costs between 15 and 20 euros.
Take a shuttle from the port:
- Paid shuttles ( 6 euros ) are available at the foot of the boat and allow you to reach the station in 10 minutes.
- From there you can easily take a train to Rome Termini.
- This option is economical and convenient for travelers who want to avoid walking to the station.
