Maximize your time and budget during cruise stops
This page was created to help you plan your cruise stops more efficiently. You’ll know which port excursions are paid and which are free, allowing you to maximize your time and budget. You’ll also learn how disembarkation works during your cruise stop at a port. You’ll find out that some excursions are not free, and vice versa. I’ve listed all the ports I’ve visited during my many cruises, along with all the stops in the Mediterranean.
For all the stops in the Mediterranean that I’ve listed, I’ll give you my opinion on the most beautiful ones. This opinion may be subjective as it’s the opinion of a tourist (like you) and some fellow cruisers who provide their valuable feedback as well. I’ve marked them with this symbol 👁 when it’s a must-see stop, 👁👁 when you can’t miss it, and 👁👁👁 when you must see it at least once in your lifetime because it’s a paradise!

How to exit the cruise port in Civitavecchia
When you make a stopover in Civitavecchia, located 70 km from Rome, it is important to understand that you will need to find your own means of transport to reach the Italian capital. Unfortunately, many cruise passengers mistakenly think that Civitavecchia is Rome, perhaps due to the label “Civitavecchia/Rome” on cruise stopover itineraries. However, this is not the case, and it is essential to make your own way to Rome.
Cruise lines will offer excursions to reach Rome aboard their buses, but it is very expensive (99 euros per person). This high price can be a significant drain on your budget, especially if you are traveling in a group.
However, there are much more affordable and equally practical options that we use.
→ Alternative options for getting to Rome
- Good plan for this shuttle, the SHUTTLE BUS does the same circuit and is taken 150 meters from Largo della Pace (2 minutes on foot right opposite) and costs 25 euros return
- Shuttle from the port of Civitavecchia . 30 euros round trip (an increase of 5 euros since May instead of 25 euros).
- Tourist bus to Rome from Civitavecchia . Choose a panoramic bus tour from Civitavecchia for a flexible discovery of Rome, jumping on and off at your favorite sites in complete freedom.
- Luxury private transfer from Civitavecchia port to Rome for 2/3 people. For added comfort and personalization, consider a private transfer to Rome from Civitavecchia if you can afford it.
Please note: free shuttles are available at the foot of the boat to leave the port in just 3 minutes (free shuttle). All the excursions you have booked depart from there.
Reach Rome by train from Civitavecchia
After leaving the port of Civitavecchia, you have three options to reach Rome: walking, taxi or shuttle.
1. Access on foot to Civitavecchia Station:
- The station is about a 20-minute walk from the port.
- Follow the signs for “Stazione Ferroviaria” or “Train Station” to get there easily.
- This ride is ideal for budget-conscious travelers.
2. Take a taxi to Civitavecchia:
- If you prefer a faster and more comfortable journey, opt for a taxi.
- The ride lasts around 10 minutes and usually costs between 15 and 20 euros.
3. Take a shuttle from the port:
- Free shuttles are available at the foot of the boat and allow you to reach the station in 10 minutes.
- From there you can easily take a train to Rome Termini.
- This option is economical and convenient for travelers who want to avoid the walk to the station.

How does the stop in Venice work?
If you have the chance to stopover in Venice (Venezia) or board your cruise there, you will be delighted. This stopover is truly unique, because Venice is a treasure among the cities of the world. When you arrive in Venice by boat, rest assured, the trip is completely free. You will disembark either by rowboat, because the liner remains at sea and no longer docks at the port, or by bus, which takes around 20 minutes. And guess what? The cruise line covers this trip, you won’t have to pay anything!
The must-see stop for everyone is the famous Piazza Roma. This is where all the bus terminals converge. From there, you have a choice: opt for a gondola ride through Venice’s picturesque canals or explore the city on foot. During our visit, we had the privilege of doing both, in the company of our children, and each option delighted us in its own way.
What to do in Venice?
Venice, the city of a thousand canals, is an unmissable tourist destination in Italy. It offers a multitude of activities and sites to see, for all tastes and budgets.
- Visit the city’s must-see attractions:
- St. Mark’s Basilica, masterpiece of Byzantine architecture
- Doge’s Palace, former seat of government of the Republic of Venice
- Rialto Bridge, the oldest bridge over the Grand Canal
- St. Mark’s Square, the largest square in Venice
- Take a gondola ride
- An unmissable experience to discover the city like a local
- Let yourself be lulled by the waters of the Grand Canal
- Visit the lagoon islands:
- Murano, famous for its glassworks
- Burano, known for its colorful houses
- Torcello, the oldest island in the lagoon
- Attend a puppet show
- A centuries-old tradition in Venice
- Venetian puppets are known for their sophistication and humor
- Taste Venetian cuisine
- Tasty dishes based on fish and seafood
- Don’t miss tasting cicchetti, Venetian tapas

How to Leave the Cruise Port in Genoa?
During your stopover in Genoa, you will be happy to know that you can easily disembark from the boat in just 7 minutes on foot, without the need to take a taxi (free exit). This proximity will allow you to fully optimize your time.
I have had the opportunity to visit Genoa several times (even too many) because Genoa is the first port of embarkation, so on almost every itinerary, Genoa is there. If you have already visited Genoa, opt for Portofino.
Portofino in Genoa
Portofino, an extraordinarily beautiful and unique town, is located nearby. Its picturesque landscapes, colorful houses and enchanting atmosphere make it a real treasure to discover. If the idea of visiting Portofino appeals to you, I recommend opting for the tourist bus.
Indeed, boat activities are not always adapted to disembarkation times, requiring a full 9-hour day. On the other hand, with the bus you can explore all the sites starting at 10 a.m. and return to Genoa at 3:30 p.m., leaving plenty of time to see everything. If you want to learn more, check out the activities below.
Bocadasse district in Genoa
Now let’s talk about the charming Boccadasse district.
- To get there, you can take a bus from Piazza Verdi (where the train station is) in the city center.
- Take number 31 to reach this picturesque corner.
- Walk for 20 minutes (it’s easy)
Boccadasse is famous for its colorful houses, its picturesque little streets, its delicious seafood restaurants, and its magnificent beach. It is a true haven of peace where you can relax and enjoy the authentic atmosphere of the region. This is my favorite neighborhood in Genoa.
What to do in Genoa during a cruise stopover?
- Visit the Genoa Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in Europe. There you will discover a collection of more than 700 marine species, including sharks, turtles, dolphins and penguins.
- Take a guided tour of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There you will discover historical monuments such as the Spinola Palace, the San Lorenzo Cathedral and the ancient port. The old port of Genoa where Christopher Columbus embarked on his voyage to America
- Hop on a hop-on hop-off bus to explore the city at your own pace. This type of tour is ideal for cruise passengers who want to see as much as possible in a limited time. You can reserve your places below.

How to leave the cruise port in Palermo?
Arriving at the port, you won’t even need a shuttle, you will be directly in the heart of the city. It’s super practical! Leaving the port you will find all kinds of transportation available: taxis, horse-drawn carriages (unfortunately the horses seem neglected and without water, it was really horrible), small trains and even tourist buses.

- The little train will take you to Palermo Cathedral, where you can stroll through the picturesque streets, full of small shops, ice cream parlors (Gelateria) and much more…
- Personally, I go to Palermo twice a year and the tourist bus is definitely the best choice. This avoids getting tired with the climbs in Palermo.

How to exit the cruise port in livorno?
Wondering how to get out of the cruise port in Livorno with ease? When you arrive, the cruise companies will offer you tickets in your cabin to go to Piazza del Municipio, just 3 minutes by bus, at a price of 7.99 euros (personally I find these prices exaggerated, I am done by walking 5 minutes).
However, my advice is to take the free shuttle bus to leave the port, as it is large and impassable on foot. At the exit, agents from MSC, Costa and other companies will give you a free pink ticket, offered by the port of Livorno. Board this free shuttle, which will take you out of the port in just 4 minutes. Then, a 5-minute walk is enough to reach Piazza del Municipio, in the immediate vicinity.
→If you want to visit Pisa by train
Getting there by train is the most economical option.
Meet at Livorno station (Livorno Centrale). Take the train towards Pisa Centrale. The journey lasts 17 minutes and costs only 5.60 euros return per person.
→If you want to visit Livorno
At the exit of the port of Livorno you will find taxis available. However, be careful if you want to visit the city. Some drivers may try to offer you exorbitant prices, up to three times higher than normal. Don’t give in and always negotiate!
Another interesting option if you only want to visit Livorno is to opt for tourist buses . Opting for the tourist bus in Livorno ensures you don’t miss anything, as it serves every emblematic place in the city. You can hop off and hop back on at each stop, giving you the flexibility to see all the must-see sites and move between locations as you prefer. - Comfortable . Taxis in Tarragona are clean and comfortable.
- Correct price if you are traveling with 2 (or more), it is more advantageous to take a taxi compared to the shuttle!
- 17 euros from the port (where the free shuttle drops you off) to the city center.
Disadvantages
- Availability . It can be difficult to find a taxi, especially during peak season or when 2,000 passengers want a taxi at the same time.
→ Walk
Benefits
- Free . This is the most economical way to get to the city center.
- Good for your health . Walking is a great way to exercise and stay in shape. Granted, we already walk 10 km a day: 3 km to the buffet, 2 to the theater, 3 to the cabin 😂😂.
- Discover the city . You can discover the city at your own pace and admire the landscapes.
Disadvantages
- Long (for some). The walk lasts about 25 minutes but the view is magnificent (when you love the sea..)
- Weather . The weather can affect your walking experience, especially if it is hot or rainy.
- Luggage . If you have bulky luggage, it may be difficult to transport it on foot, in which case opt for a taxi.
If you like walking, Tarragona city centre is within walking distance from the port. A pleasant 20-30 minute walk will allow you to discover the city at your own pace and enjoy the magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea. We went down with about twenty cruise passengers, and it is easy to do, without requiring any particular physical condition. Ideal to avoid paying for a shuttle when you are a family, you might as well keep that money to enjoy a good ice cream for 2 euros!

How to exit the cruise port in Valencia
During your stopover in Valencia, the cruise companies will offer you a bus to get to the city center for a price of 12.90 euros per person.
On the other hand, let me give you some wise advice: avoid these tickets, because you can reach the same place as us (i.e. the city center, where you will pay 12.90 if you take the tickets on the boat) for only 1.50 euro one way, or 3 euros round trip (pay directly on the bus). It’s really simple:
As you disembark from the boat, you will see free shuttles chartered by the port. Recognizable by their orange color , they will take you to the exit of the port. There, you just have to walk for 2 minutes following the blue arrows on the ground ➡️ which will lead you to the bus.
How to get from the port of Valencia to the city center?
→If you want to explore the city center to visit the central mercado, the cathedral, etc., take bus number 4 , just a two-minute walk from the port. The journey takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and you get off at the Ayuntamiento or Plaça de la Reina stop (they follow each other).
→ For a stroll in the superb Turia gardens , which I highly recommend, instead of taking bus 4, take bus 95 towards Turia. It’s the same price and it’s taken in the same place as 4. It’s truly an experience not to be missed!
On your return, take these same buses which will take you to the cruise port and take the free orange shuttle to get on the boat! By following these tips, you will visit the same places for much less money.
If you are traveling in a group, I highly recommend taking the Bonobus card: 10 journeys for 10 euros.
- You can also opt for the Hop on Hop off service in Valencia, for only 22 euros. I book my ticket for the tourist bus .

Ibiza is an island in the Balearic Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Mediterranean. It is known for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and unique culture.
How to exit the cruise port in Ibiza
When you arrive in Ibiza, the cruise companies will offer you buses for 13 euros (or 15 with Costa) to get to the city center, claiming that it is far away (20/30 minutes). But reading below, you will realize that you can go there for almost 3 times cheaper (because it is very close)…
My advice to avoid feeling cheated: walk 4 minutes after leaving the liner and go to the Taxi Boat (blue signs indicating the direction). Take a water taxi for 6 euros round trip.
As you will notice, you can buy this ticket directly on the boat (recognizable by their blue or white color) and it will take you to the city center.
You can even use it to get to Talamenca Beach, which is only a 3-minute walk from the stop. From there you can enjoy the beautiful beach and surroundings before returning to the port. If you leave Talamenca beach, to return to the ship you have to walk 10 minutes (but it’s really close and the landscape is sublime).

How to leave the cruise port in Palma de Mallorca?
When you stopover in Palma de Mallorca, your cruise company will offer you tickets for 13 euros round trip and will drop you off at Plaça de Reina, not far from the cathedral.
My advice:
Leave the port on foot, when you get off the boat you only have to walk 2 minutes to take a bus or a taxi. Personally and there are many of us, the 13 euro ticket is not advantageous.
You can take a taxi from the port exit. For a trip from the port of Palma to the cathedral, for example, count 10 euros.
If you are with family you will have understood that the taxi is much more advantageous.
For couples you can share the costs with another cruise couple, it costs less and it’s very trendy.

How to leave the cruise port in Tunis – la Goulette?
When you arrive at the port of La Goulette, you will immediately be transported to a completely different universe. Located just 10 km from the center of Tunis, you will find at the exit of the boat a free shuttle (chartered by the port) which will take you to entrance E2 of the main terminal. And guess what? A little surprise awaits you at the main entrance: the Harbor village. This charming village offers a nice overview of Tunis with its shops, restaurants and activities, all accompanied by smiling and warm Tunisians!
The port itself is a place to visit in itself, with a damn beautiful concept! Once outside the port, you will find taxis waiting for you (but be careful, negotiate the prices carefully because sometimes they are a little exaggerated 😅).
Right at the foot of the boat, you will have the opportunity to take a photo or even take a short camel ride with Tunisians who, sometimes, even play music! It’s a truly unique destination!
If you want to go to the city center of Tunis, I advise you to take the small train of the TGM line, the Tunis-Goulette-Marsa (allow around 15 minutes for the journey). This is the ideal option for those on a tight budget, as it is very economical.

How to exit the port in Lisbon
During your cruise stopover in Lisbon, you will be happy to know that the main docking docks are all located close to each other, simplifying your travels. Four terminals make up the Lisbon cruise port: Alcantara, Rocha Conde Obidos, Jardim Tabaco and Santa Apolonia (the latter being the dock where most boats dock). They are all located along the Tagus River, which allows cruise ships to dock right in the city center.
The port is strategically placed near metro and bus stations, making exploring the city extremely convenient.
Take this opportunity to discover the wonders of Lisbon, in particular by visiting the magnificent Palace of Sintra, a true palette of colors and splendor and between us my favorite in Lisbon.
To reach the heart of the city, taxis are a natural option if you wish. However, I highly recommend opting for the famous Lisbon tram. This scenic experience is both unique and economical, allowing you to appreciate the scenery while you get around.

How to leave the cruise port
Dear cruise passengers, when you arrive in Mykonos, prepare to be blown away! It’s one of my favorite destinations, and I’m sure the change of scenery will be guaranteed. To leave the port, you have 1 option and it is TOP, it is the boat’s rowboat since the boat remains at sea, it does not moor in the port of Mykonos but 4 minutes by rowboat from the port. You will have understood that there is a free exit and above all, prepare your heart because it will be full.
Once you exit the port, that’s when the magic happens. You will only need to walk about 2 minutes along the port to immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of Mykonos. The streets are simply beautiful, and I warn you, you may fall in love with this island forever.
So, follow your heart and have an unforgettable experience in Mykonos. I advise you to make the most of every moment and explore all the treasures that this incredible island has to offer.
Small important point because some people still haven’t understood that going to a country requires a minimum of good manners. The Greeks are a very, very welcoming people, very polite I find, and this is what I teach my children. Even if we don’t speak the language, we should always say hello, goodbye and thank you. So if you don’t know, I’ll give you a little help with phonetics!
Hello (morning) = Kaliméra (afternoon): Kalispera Goodbye = Adio Thank you = efcharisto (pronounced F aristo)

How to leave the cruise port in Santorini?
Dear readers, let me share with you a well-kept secret. Arriving in Santorini is already a free excursion that is worth the detour. Cruise ships find a prime location, nestled between the island of Santorini itself and the island of Na Kameni. Believe me, the arrival is simply spectacular!
When you arrive in Santorini you will be taken by rowboats to the parking lot, the experience is really great.
Then if you want to visit the lower part of Santorini, you will find some shops and restaurants there but… For everyone, what you absolutely must not miss is Fira, the city center which is located up high. I recommend the cable car because I am against animal abuse and even if it is a custom there, I prefer to leave the donkeys alone..
For the cable car, count 6€ per trip (adult) and 3€ for children. Last solution for athletes is to take the stairs with some 550 steps (allow 45 minutes) to go up.
However, you can go up with the cable car and go down by the stairs. If you want to visit Oia with its typical houses, shops, restaurants, it is 10/15 minutes from Fira (below)..

- Explore archaeological sites. Visit Santorini’s archaeological sites, such as Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan city preserved beneath volcanic ash, or Ancient Thera, an ancient hilltop city.

This small Greek island has a peaceful and warm atmosphere that invites discovery. Here we don’t recommend a busy list of activities, because the magic of Patmos lies in simplicity. You can explore the island on foot or by tuk-tuk, and there aren’t really any must-see sites to speak of, other than the charm of the city center with its quaint shops, authentic restaurants, welcoming bars and magnificent beaches.

During your cruise stopover in Drubovnik, don’t panic, your ship docks in the old town! Free exit.
The boats dock just meters from the beautiful main street, providing close proximity to all the wonders that Dubrovnik has to offer. You’ll find buses, information points, and everything you need to explore this magnificent city. Personally, as a fan of both cities, Split and Dubrovnik, I can assure you that every corner of these places is steeped in history and charm.
Explore Dubrovnik Old Town by taking the cable car to enjoy stunning views. Deliberately get lost in the maze of narrow cobblestone streets, discover the bustling market, visit the majestic palaces, historic towers, mystical monasteries and picturesque houses. Dubrovnik, Split’s big sister, offers you a unique experience you won’t soon forget.
In addition, a few minutes from the center, Banje beach awaits you offering a refreshing break. The downside of this beach is that it is small and therefore quickly overcrowded. A word of advice: don’t rent umbrellas because they’re expensive for nothing. Opt instead for a short stop of one hour to refresh yourself, and choose restaurants in town rather than those on the beach, it’s not great!

Homosexuality on cruises
Cruise ports and stops in the mediterranean
Are you gay? Do you have questions, concerns, or even fears?
Over the last 15 years, I have had the chance to take part in numerous cruises (around thirty) and I have always been well received. Passengers on board a boat are infinitely tolerant, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. The LGBTQ+ community is often very visible on cruise ships, which creates a sense of solidarity and mutual support.
Homosexuality on cruises is a topic that is increasingly being discussed, and cruise lines are becoming more aware of the needs of homosexual passengers. Many companies offer cruises specially designed for members of the LGBTQ+ community, with events and activities dedicated to them.
In terms of safety, cruise ships are one of the safest modes of travel in the world. Cruise lines take the safety of their passengers very seriously and have rigorous procedures in place to ensure everyone stays safe. There are never any fights or violence on cruise ships, and if an incident ever occurs, security officials take immediate action to resolve the situation. Passengers looking for trouble are quickly disembarked from the boat.
MTT wishes you the most wonderful of cruises.
