Boston cruise port excursions

How to get out of the harbor in Boston ?

When you arrive in Boston, you’ll immediately discover plenty of things to see and do. This stopover is a real gem! Personally, I loved every moment and felt like a wide-eyed child. To get to downtown, you can walk in about 30 minutes. Right outside the port, you’ll also find taxis, buses, and trolleys.

Leaving the port is free, my friends! The 30-minute walk might seem long to some, but it’s very manageable, especially if you want to save money or are on a budget.

A little tip: some companies offer round-trip tickets for $22 to reach downtown. I don’t recommend them. We chose the trolley, and it was fantastic! The drivers are very friendly. In addition to dropping you off downtown, the trolley makes a full loop around the city. You can get off wherever you like and hop back on as many times as you want. With this system, Boston will have no more secrets for you.

For me, Boston is a true favorite. If you take the trolley, it’s located at the foot of the ship, on the left as you exit the port. The trolleys on the right are often reserved by cruise companies and tickets are twice as expensive. The standard ticket drops you off downtown, but you’re free to continue your visit however you like. Your adventure starts here!

The best things to do in Boston

Boston, a city rich in history and culture, is an essential stopover for cruise passengers in New England. Here are some ideas for activities to make the most of your stopover.

Freedom Trail

The Freedom Trail is the historic heart of Boston and a true dive into American history. This 4 km route, easily accessible on foot from the cruise port, connects 16 iconic sites, each telling a chapter of the American Revolution and the birth of the United States. Among the must-see stops are Boston Common, the oldest public park in the United States, Paul Revere’s House, and the Old State House, a landmark of Massachusetts’ Declaration of Independence. Each site offers a unique blend of architectural heritage and fascinating historical anecdotes. The Freedom Trail is perfect for cruisers who want to explore Boston at their own pace while immersing themselves in history.

The trail is dotted with small squares and cafes, perfect for a break. Wear comfortable shoes, take your time to stroll, and don’t forget your camera: the red brick buildings, statues, and commemorative plaques make for great photo memories.

How to get around

Boston cruise port excursions

Trolley – The ideal choice

If you had to choose just one option to explore Boston, it would be the trolley. When exiting the ship, turn left: the starting point is just a few steps away. Hop on and enjoy a full city tour!

You can get off wherever you like and reboard as many times as needed. Commentary accompanies you throughout the ride. It’s fast, comfortable, and above all convenient. In a single day of your cruise stop, you’ll see the essentials of Boston without wasting time.

On foot

Downtown Boston is compact. It takes about 30 minutes on foot to reach the historic neighborhoods. Walking is free and perfect for strolling through picturesque streets, Beacon Hill, or the North End.

Taxi / Uber / Lyft

Expect a 10–15 minute ride to reach downtown. It’s convenient if you’re short on time but much less economical than the trolley.

Public transport (MBTA)

Boston’s subway system, called the T, along with buses, is an economical option. With a CharlieCard, you get discounted fares. For a one-day stopover, the 1-Day Pass costs $11.

⚠️ Attention: trolleys located to the right when exiting the port are reserved for cruise companies. Their tickets are often resold at double the price. To avoid this, book your tickets in advance and make the most of your day.
