Arrival at the port of Savona
Arrival at the port during your stopover in Savona offers a panoramic view of the city and the sea. The port is close to the city center 5 minutes away, allowing you to easily begin your exploration on foot. When you arrive at the port of Savona you will see that it is a real delight, restaurants, bars, shops… There are also taxis and buses available to get around.
What to do in Savona?
The port of Savona is magnificent, however it is not the most beautiful Italian city, but there are some activities to do to keep you busy.

- Medieval streets. Savona’s city centre is a maze of cobbled streets, lined with historic buildings with colourful facades. Every corner reveals a new discovery, be it a small hidden square or an ancient church.
- Popolo Square. This main square is the beating heart of Savona. Here you will find cafes, restaurants and lively shops. It is a perfect place to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere.
- Priamar Fortress. Dominating the city centre, this impressive fortress offers an insight into the region’s military history. It also houses museums and temporary exhibitions.
- Guided tours exist for 350 euros but I don’t offer them to you because it’s a bargain.

- Impressive architecture. Built in the 16th century by the Republic of Genoa, the Priamar Fortress is a fascinating example of military architecture. Its imposing walls, robust bastions and panoramic views of the sea and the city make it a must-see attraction.
- Museum and exhibitions. The fortress houses a museum that features exhibits on the history of Savona, local archeology, and the evolution of the fortress itself. There you will discover fascinating artifacts, models and historical documents.
Practical information
- Access. The Priamar Fortress is located in Piazza del Brandale, near the historic center of Savona. You can easily reach it on foot from the port and the city center.
- Schedules and tickets. The fortress is open all year round.
- Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekends from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Admission is free but you have to pay 5 euros for the museum and 3 euros for children.

The Cathedral of the Assumption, also known as Cattedrale di Nostra Signora Assunta, is a magnificent example of Baroque architecture. Its majestic façade and impressive ornamental details immediately attract attention.

- Sistine Chapel in Savona. Be sure to visit the adjacent Sistine Chapel, built by Pope Sixtus IV in honor of his parents. This chapel is decorated with magnificent frescoes and is a true hidden gem of Savona.

The sanctuary of the seas in Savona

- Whale watching. The Pelagos Sanctuary is one of the best places in the Mediterranean to observe cetaceans. You can see dolphins, whales and sometimes even sperm whales. Boat trips are regularly organized from Savona to allow visitors to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
- Marine wealth. In addition to cetaceans, the sanctuary is home to an incredible diversity of marine life. You will be able to observe several species of fish, sea turtles and a variety of sea birds.

- Access. Excursions to the Sanctuary of Pelagos depart from the port of Savona. Advance reservations are recommended to guarantee your spot on these popular excursions. Meeting point : Largo Marinai d’Italia, Savona SV, Italy
- Schedules. Boat trips take place mainly during the months of May-April to September daily. In winter a few days a month, when weather conditions are favorable. Start of the excursion at 9am – Price – 60 euros/p. (if you can afford it, I really recommend it!
- Duration – 3 hours.

A hidden pearl near Savona
Bergeggi is an ideal destination for those looking to reconnect with nature and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Ligurian coast. Personally, when I stop over for the umpteenth time in Savona, I love the atmosphere of this town, and its beaches are wonderful.

- Picturesque setting. Perched on a hill overlooking the Ligurian Sea, the village of Bergeggi offers stunning views. Its narrow streets and colorful houses make it a charming and typically Mediterranean place.

Walking
- Historical Center. The heart of Savona can be easily reached on foot. Major attractions such as the Priamar Fortress, the Savona Cathedral and the numerous museums are within walking distance of each other.
- Nice walk. Strolling through the cobblestone streets and along the seafront is a pleasant way to discover the city. Enjoy the many cafes, shops and restaurants along the way.
Bus
- Bus network. Savona has an efficient bus network managed by TPL Linea. Buses cover most of the city’s neighborhoods and attractions, as well as the surrounding areas.
- Tickets and schedules. Tickets can be purchased at kiosks, tobacconists and directly from drivers (with a small surcharge).
Taxi
- Taxi ranks. Taxis are available throughout the city, including stations near train stations, main squares and tourist spots. You can also call a taxi or use a booking app.
Bicycle
- Bike rental . There are several bike rental points in Savona. Renting a bike is a great option to explore the city and its surroundings in an active and eco-friendly way.
- Cycle tracks. Savona has several cycle paths, especially along the coast, which offer wonderful views and a pleasant experience.

- Access. Savona’s beaches are easily accessible on foot from the city center or by public transport. Local buses serve the main beaches.
